Luis Trelles

Luis Trelles (he/him) is a journalist dedicated to telling character-driven stories in sound. He was previously a senior editor with the NPR weekly show Latino USA. As a producer with Radio Ambulante, an NPR podcast that tells the stories of Latin America and Latinx communities in the U.S., Luis reported on issues of political violence, inequality and natural disasters in his home island of Puerto Rico, and also in Cuba, the Dominican Republic and in immigrant communities stateside.

His reporting has appeared in Radiolab, Planet Money, Reply All, and NPR’s All Things Considered and Morning Edition. As a professor, Luis has taught at the Journalism School of the City University of New York and the University of Puerto Rico.

In 2018 he was selected as a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellow in the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His book on artisanal, clandestine rummakers in Puerto Rico, “Metiendo Caña,” was published in Spanish in 2016.
