Chris Juhn

Chris Juhn is a freelance photojournalist born and raised in Burnsville, Minnesota. At a young age he was diagnosed with a form of Autism.
Through the public school system he learned about many inequalities that people with disabilities face through personal experience. Photojournalism was attractive to Chris because it allowed him connect with others through the camera in a way that made him overcome some of the barriers that his Autism caused him.
“Through the camera, photography allowed me to overcome many of the things I struggled with growing up. When you go through the special education system and after you get diagnosed with a disability you lose a part of yourself. Along the way I stopped seeing my own humanity.”
“What photojournalism has done is its given me the ability to see the humanity in everyone. The homeless, the outcasts, the oppressed, and communities that are often looked down upon by broader society. Through seeing their humanity I regained my own and through photography I hope to capture those moments that might cause others to see this too. At our core it’s our emotions that connect us and if you can show that you show the human condition which we all experience. Through our emotions we speak the international language of humanity.”
Chris specializes in protest photography and plans to document more around disability in the future. Chris is a Maynard fellow through the Maynard 200 program, he attended the Mountain Workshop in 2019, and he’s currently working to build a disability focused online news site called ABLE Press, which he plans to launch later this year (2020).
